A Great Author-Mom Moment

Our two-week Spring Break just ended, and I was playing Dance Mom all this past weekend—the result is I didn’t have a post prepared for today. So what’s a gal to do?

Well, I thought I’d tell you about a pretty awesome author/mom moment that happened over the weekend.

As mentioned above, I was playing Dance Mom all weekend—that’s because my daughter is a competitive dancer. This weekend’s dance competition was about an hour away, and she had dances on both days. Her studio implemented a ‘phone free’ policy for the weekend (I know - the HORROR!) and so I decided she should also leave her Kindle at home (it’s mostly for Minecraft rather than reading). The travel conditions to and from on Saturday were horrible (spring snowstorm anyone?), and my daughter mostly read in the car. However, on Sunday we started talking when we got on the road and the next thing we knew we were at the venue.

What were we talking about? Books. More specifically, a book she wants me to write for her. We discussed characters and plot and drafted up the start of an outline.

When we got to the venue she commented with a touch of surprise, “We talked the whole time!” It was one of the best ‘Mom’ days I’ve had in a long time. My daughter turns 12 later this year, so I’m dangerously close to the ‘not cool’ zone. And thanks to technology, I rarely get 60 seconds of dedicated focus from my kid, let alone 60 minutes.

My daughter loves to read all kinds of books and write stories of her own, so my being an author has given us a common connection that will only grow stronger as she gets older. And I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

What’s one of your greatest life moments that happened because you’re an author?
