Our two-week Spring Break just ended, and I was playing Dance Mom all this past weekend—the result is I didn’t have a post prepared for today. So what’s a gal to do?
Well, I thought I’d tell you about a pretty awesome author/mom moment that happened over the weekend.
As mentioned above, I was playing Dance Mom all weekend—that’s because my daughter is a competitive dancer. This weekend’s dance competition was about an hour away, and she had dances on both days. Her studio implemented a ‘phone free’ policy for the weekend (I know - the HORROR!) and so I decided she should also leave her Kindle at home (it’s mostly for Minecraft rather than reading). The travel conditions to and from on Saturday were horrible (spring snowstorm anyone?), and my daughter mostly read in the car. However, on Sunday we started talking when we got on the road and the next thing we knew we were at the venue.
What were we talking about? Books. More specifically, a book she wants me to write for her. We discussed characters and plot and drafted up the start of an outline.
When we got to the venue she commented with a touch of surprise, “We talked the whole time!” It was one of the best ‘Mom’ days I’ve had in a long time. My daughter turns 12 later this year, so I’m dangerously close to the ‘not cool’ zone. And thanks to technology, I rarely get 60 seconds of dedicated focus from my kid, let alone 60 minutes.
My daughter loves to read all kinds of books and write stories of her own, so my being an author has given us a common connection that will only grow stronger as she gets older. And I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
What’s one of your greatest life moments that happened because you’re an author?

I don't think I have a great author life moment. I am grateful my son loves to read. And I love reading books with him that I enjoyed as a kid. He just finished Wayside School by Louis Sachar. I think that's my favorite thing.
This story warms my heart Carrie! I used to cherish the time in the car with the kids, because I knew all too well as soon they would get their license, and my time would be severely limited. One of my daughters likes to write, she's 29, and it is our favorite go to topic even today.
My favorite author moment happened just recently. When I first started blogging I had a weird dream that I entered a coffee shop and someone was reading my blog! Dreams are just dreams but I've always held this one in my pocket. Last week I walked into our local Starbucks and someone was reading a post from Living in the Gap, she looked up and laughed, "I'm reading your blog." Everyone turned and looked at me. It was a good friend and she told me she always reads an old post while waiting for her coffee? Dream come true...
That is great! I also love reading with my daughter. Such good memories.
That is so cool, Cheryl! I've always said I'm gonna fan-girl out like crazy the first time I randomly see someone out reading one of my books. :D
I JUST tonight went for drinks at a neighbor's house and as I was leaving someone whom I hadn't had a chance to speak with yet said, "Hey, I've read all of your books and follow you on FB." I live in a TINY village so it was funny and cool at the same time. Also, love those car conversations. For me and The Boy, it tends to be walking the dog, but whenever they talk to you is a win at this age, right?
That is cool! And yes - I'll take advantage of any conversation at this age!
