Literary Tattoos

Another quality post brought to you by Steve!

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.  And a picture on skin is worth a few hundred bucks.  One of the neat things about being alive in 2015 is that tattoos are finally common enough for respectable people like authors (yeah, right) to have them.  And I have seen/heard of some fascinating ones.

I think it would be neat to do a post about authors with tattoos, particularly literary tattoos.  If you're interested in being featured in such a post in the future, just include a link to your ink in the comments below.  And so you don't think I won't put my money where my mouth is, I'll kick things off:

Obviously, you can tell I'm a horror author.  The crow is a reference to Old Crow, a favorite drink of both mine and one of my characters.  (Anybody know who?)  And the hyena is a reference to an as-yet unpublished novel of mine.

So how about it?  Can you top me?  Tell us about it in the comments, and remember to leave a link!

Nice ink! I got my one and only tattoo 20 years ago - a dolphin. Sorry, I won't be providing a picture (which should be acceptable since it's not literary related). I've thought about getting another some day - but not sure what yet. Butterflies are meaningful to my family for various reasons, and I have been giving though to finding a way to tie in a butterfly with a literary element. Who knows :-)

One of my favorite movies is "Papillon" starring Steve McQueen, based on a largely fictionalized autobiography by a prisoner in the penal system of French Guiana. He has a lovely butterfly tattoo on his chest (hence the nickname) that also plays an important plot point. There's even a character based on him in THE GHOUL ARCHIPELAGO.

I once put on a fake tattoo that I got as swag for a book- that's as close as I can come, sorry! But if I were ever to get a tattoo, it'd prolly be an ampersand.

I have no ink and my husband detests tattoos. I said, "I'll get your name! It'll be fun." Nope. But if I had to get a literary tattoo, I'd go for...some literary representation of The Moffats, my favorite book as a kid. That seems weird.

Oh, yeah, that's like your symbol. That'd be awesome. :)

That would be cool! Of course, you've got to live with him and vice versa.

I don't have any tattoos yet, but I do have plans for a few, as I have for years. The Baron (my husband) and I have talked about getting coordinating tattoos. One of the ideas was a Chuck Palahniuk quote from Fight Club. Another idea was "I've lived a thousand lives" and mine would be over a book and his would be over an old school video game controller.

Wait, is your husband really a baron? I feel like you're burying the lede on that one.

Make sure the initials inside the heart are "SK."

Ha! Short answer: no.

Long answer: I changed my Facebook name a few years ago for privacy reasons, so the Baron changed his in support. However, while I used the name of the main character in my first manuscript, he went with Baron Hugendong Von Cockenschtuff. When I'd tag him, it would shorten to Baron. Even though we've both changed our names back, the Baron stuck. So much so that my weld cap sewing business is Baroness Caps and I refer to him as the Baron when talking about him offline too.

That's...the greatest pseudonym I've ever heard...
